Lou Posner: The Interface Between Life and Art
Based on a photograph taken by his wife during a hospitalization, Am I Dead Yet? is an unusually personal self-portrait documenting Posner's experience as a patient. Standing beside a hospital window, his head bowed and medical electrodes attached to his body, Posner appears vulnerable and isolated within the impersonal surroundings of institutional care. The clinical details—the hospital information board and monitoring electrodes—contrast with the deeply human figure at the center of the composition. As Posner began confronting numerous health problems, the painting became particularly meaningful to him. He was
deeply affected by the psychological experience of hospitalization and what he described as “Hospital Patient Syndrome” or “Hospital Psychosis.” Reflecting on the experience in November 2012, he wrote simply: “It was a nightmare.” Perhaps the painting's most striking feature is the way Posner allows portions of his figure to dissolve into the surrounding hospital environment. The boundaries between patient and institution become indistinct, creating an unsettling impression that the man himself is gradually disappearing. Together with the painting's haunting title, Am I Dead Yet?, this unusual treatment of the figure gives visual expression to the vulnerability and loss of identity that can accompany serious illness.
